PD Detect

PD DETECT – alpha-synuclein
seed amplification assay

We develop highly sensitive detection methods for the early detection of disease-specific alpha-synuclein aggregates.

MODAG’s Lewy-fold specific SAA, PD DETECT, enables faster and more precise diagnosis and potentially earlier therapeutic intervention through early identification of SAA-positive patients.

97.8 % Sensitivity

  • Parkinson‘s disease (PD)

  • Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB)

100% Specificity

  • Controls

  • Multiple system atrophy (MSA)

PD DETECT Patents & Licensing

  • International patent application pending: WO 2026/017679 A1
Method for detecting misfolded alpha-synuclein protein in biological samples to determine the presence of synucleinopathies in an individual.

  • Licensing of NIH patent EP 3 692 373 A1
Assay for the detection of alpha-synuclein seeding activity associated with synucleinopathies.

This test advances Parkinson’s diagnostics by enabling early, accurate detection, crucial for future treatments.

PD DETECT Test setup and principle

In a 96 well format, patients‘ CSF samples are contacted with PD DETECT reaction mix and examined for the presence of pathological alpha-synuclein aggregates.

Potential alpha-synuclein seeds in the sample are multiplied through shaking and resting cycles in vitro and detected using a fluorescent dye.

Readouts

  • Early detection: identification of SAA-positive patients at an early stage of the disease

  • Precision: High sensitivity and specificity enable a clear differential diagnosis between Parkinson’s and MSA

  • Qualitative (PD DETECT): YES/NO results

  • Quantitative (RUO): the novel quantitative metric (LFP score) allows for the robust quantification of pathological alpha-synuclein seeds in patients. It exhibits superior correlation with key clinical parameters of disease severity and allows monitoring disease progression in individual patients for the first time.

Redefining
Parkinson’s diagnostics

Clinical Examination

Traditionally diagnosed via symptoms (tremor, stiffness, slow movements) + neuroimaging

PD DETECT:
Detects Parkinson’s even at early stages

Imaging Procedures

Traditionally shows brain structure changes or dopamine deficiency

PD DETECT:
Detects misfolded alpha-synuclein, the core pathology of Parkinson’s

L-Dopa Test

Traditionally tests medication response

PD DETECT:
Diagnoses regardless of medication response
